About Course

In today’s fast-changing world and competitive job market, the ability to solve complex problems is one of the most valuable skills you can have. This module takes you on a practical journey to understand, approach, and master Complex Problem Solving (CPS).

The first part “Understanding Complex Problem Solving” will guide you from the origins of the CPS to its relevance in today’s labour market, from STEM disciplines to the business or non-profit sector. We will explore  the difference between simple problems and find out when they become complex.

Continuing to the second part “How to Tackle Complex Problems Like a Pro”, practice meet theory. You will learn four powerful approaches—Systems Thinking, the Cynefin Framework, Six Thinking Hats, and Root Cause Analysis—and discover how to use them step by step. We will also walk through a practical workflow, from defining and breaking down the problem to testing solutions, and adapting the best strategy as situations evolve.

Finally, in the third part, “Sharpening Your CPS Skills,” you will put everything into action. Through case studies, interactive challenges, and reflection exercises, you will practice applying the frameworks to realistic scenarios. You will also explore how to cultivate the mindset, habits, and creativity that make complex problem-solving second nature in your work and life.

Part 1: Understanding Complex Problem Solving
Complex Problem Solving (CPS) is the ability to deal with ill-defined (complex and uncertain) challenges. In this part, you’ll: Trace the evolution of CPS from the cognitive revolution to modern global assessments like PISA. Understand its growing importance in today’s fast-changing world. Learn what makes problems complex compared to simple ones, and why they demand flexible thinking and collaboration.

Part 2: How to tackle problem solving like a pro
Complex problems can feel overwhelming because they involve multiple interdependent factors, changing conditions, and uncertain outcomes. To navigate this complexity, researchers have developed frameworks and approaches that guide thinking, analysis, and action. Tools like Systems Thinking, the Cynefin Framework, Root Cause Analysis. These approaches encourage structured yet flexible thinking: they teach us to clarify objectives, gather relevant information, identify causal relationships, generate alternatives, and implement solutions while adapting to feedback.

Part 3: Sharpening your CPS skills
Skills for the future will increasingly rely on soft skills—the human abilities that go beyond what machines can do. Among them, Complex Problem Solving (CPS) stands out as one of the most important. There is no fixed academic path to mastering it, but there are practical ways to strengthen it. CPS is supported by key skills we can all train: logic and analysis to organize information and find clarity, creativity to imagine new solutions, critical thinking to evaluate options wisely, and collaboration to work effectively with others. These abilities grow through practice, not theory alone. Sharpening these skills is not only useful for career growth—it also improves how we face everyday challenges and navigate an uncertain future with confidence.
