About Course

In this chapter, we are going to reflect on the growing role that technology is assuming in workplaces all over the world, and how this will impact existing jobs in the near future. We will clarify what technology literacy is, why it’s important to understand and benefit from it, and how to develop these competencies while evaluating our own level in it.

While the fear of being replaced by technology is understandable, in the first part we will see how human work is not likely to disappear but will change in form and structure, requiring the workforce to learn new and different skill sets.

In the second part, we will reflect on how being able to discover and select the best tools, understand how to use their potential, and monitor and solve problems will all be important competencies to have. These will allow us to benefit from technological innovation and work alongside it, instead of resisting change.

Developing these competencies is important now and will likely be even more so in the future. For this reason, a new approach to how we acquire competencies and a change in attitude is required. Technology is evolving too fast to make it possible to acquire all the specific skills we will need in our lifetime during a single period of time.

As such, the last part will focus on learning to learn—the skill to unlearn and learn how to use new technology—and the need for workers to develop it. While not easy, this will prove crucial for the future

Part 1: A fast Changing World
Technology change is expected to be one of the most important drivers in shaping the near future and the trend of the job market. Using data from the Future of Jobs Report 2025, we will see how digital technologies are already changing the market, and how they will continue to do so in the coming years. We will see which jobs and roles will lose relevance and which ones will start to rise and shape our future. It will not be a surprise to discover that tech-related jobs are the fastest growing in both importance and number. As a natural consequence, people with an appropriate set of skills will be increasingly in demand, and among them, acquiring “technology literacy” is expected to be one of the most important. Understanding what it really means to be tech-literate, and clarifying common misconceptions, will be your most important take-away from this part of the module.

Parte 2: Use Technology Efficently
Having a definition of technology literacy is not enough. How can someone evaluate or self-evaluate their level of it, and what does it really mean to apply it in the real world? In this part, we will use the Three Levels of Literacy Framework to explore the different stages of acquiring tech literacy: what we are able to do at each level, suggestions on how to progress to the next level, and how to maintain our tech literacy once acquired. We will then analyse the three main skills that together create technology literacy competencies: evaluate and select, use, and monitor. Each of these skills is unique but also related to the others. In the deepening section, you will also learn more about Smart Selection, which helps us focus our learning and energy efficiently

Part 3: Learn to Learn, for the present and for the future
In the last part of this module, we will focus on the topic of Learning to Learn. At first sight, it may seem not related to technology literacy, but the reality is different. We have seen in Part 1 how fast technology is evolving, and how fast it will continue to do so. Being ready for that and learning to learn will be fundamental to not become outdated too quickly and to always stay up to date with the newest technologies, being able to exploit them at their best potential, as seen in Part 2. After covering a bit of theory, this part will introduce you to practical tips and suggestions to develop learning-to-learn in your life, and you may also discover which learning style suits you best
